oneworld has been named the world's leading airline alliance for the second year running in the World's Travel Awards, which describes itself as the biggest award scheme for the industry - with its member airlines taking more accolades than members of the other groupings combined.

British Airways triumphed as the world's leading airline, while American Airlines took three top places – as the leading airline in North America, for the best in-flight entertainment and for the best airline website. Cathay Pacific took the title as Asia's leading airline, with Qantas honour for leader in Australasia. Only one Star carrier took an award – with Varig judged best in South America – while SkyTeam carriers did not make one trip to the winner's podium.

British Airways' London Eye, the giant wheel over the River Thames in the heart of the UK capital, was named the world's leading attraction.

The awards were presented at a gala ceremony in Barbados. The World Travel Awards have been in existence for 11 years, but this is just the second year that they have featured a category for best airline alliance. More than 150.000 travel agents, working for 80.000

In September, oneworld was named the world's Best Airline Alliance by some of the most frequent of the world's flyers in the other main award for this sector of the industry. It was the second time in three years that it had won the honour in the Business Traveller Awards
